Compost pit - Plan

Question: How deep should a compost pit be?

Answer: A compost pit should generally be about 60–90 cm deep. That depth is ideal because: It’s deep enough to hold a good volume of organic material and maintain warmth and moisture for decomposition. But not so deep that it becomes compacted, airless, or waterlogged — oxygen is essential for proper composting.

🌿 Small garden / household waste: 60 cm deep is sufficient. 🌾 Larger volume / mixed yard waste: 90 cm deep. 💧 In wet climates or heavy clay soil: keep it shallower 40-60 cm to avoid soggy, anaerobic compost. ☀️ In dry, hot areas: a deeper pit (up to 90 cm) helps retain moisture.
